Designer in the Spotlight Pat Savu
Biography  -  Email  -  Patterns  -  Web Site

Pat Savu
by Sigrid Wynne-Evans     © April 2006

Pat Savu is an incredibly talented designer. Her designs are wonderfully detailed, sharp, and have fantastic choices of color. You can tell by looking at her designs that she takes a lot of time in choosing colors and making sure that the design "Pops".

Pat Savu

There is something for everyone! Cats, dogs (No one surpasses Pat with her dogs!), flowers and more. She has a love for Egyptian themes as are evident by her Bast designs (items 2950 and 3114). She also created some striking designs during the 9-11 incident, especially poignant is her "Tears for Comrades" (item #2860). And, one of my favorites, which shows Pat's more whimsical side is "Elf Princess".

Take some time, and look at Pat's varied designs, I am sure you will find some you just gotta have!

Pat was born in Detroit, Michigan. She has a sister and a brother who work in the Detroit area. Her Dad worked at Chrysler as a tool and die worker.

Pat attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor for her Bachelor's degree. Afterwards, she did graduate work at the University of Illinois in Chemistry and got her Ph.D there.

After receiving her Ph.D, Pat (and her husband, whom she met at the University of Ann Arbor) went to work at 3M Company in St Paul, MN as a Research and Development Chemist. Both Pat and her husband are still working at 3M today.

Pat has two daughters 15 and 19. Her eldest daughter is studying to be a computer engineer at University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. The Savu family is proud to have 2 generations of Wolverines in their family!

Pat began beading during convalescence after a mastectomy (1992). She endured chemotherapy and reconstructive surgery after her mastectomy. As a result, she had some time to learn and practice bead work. Most of what Pat learned was from how-to beading books and off the web. Additionally, Pat took some beading classes at Embellishment and at the Bead and Button Show. Her love of beading lead to designing for herself. She loves making pictures with beads. Square stitch and brick stitch are Pat's favorite stitches.

Pat heard about Bead-Patterns.com on one of the old bead lists. The opportunity presented itself, and as result, you can find many of Pat's designs on this site, in addition to her own website.

One of Pat's greatest projects was Horus lord of the Horizon which she made for the the second Miyuki Challenge. He was a 3-D project and he had up to 4 layers of beads in parts of him. She still wears him and is rightfully proud of the project, even thou she was disappointed that the judges did not choose to enter Horus at the Bead and Button show that year.

Pat says:
"Lately, I have been feeling like life is passing me by. I have been spending more time with my family and I have been feeling like I would like to spend more time traveling and seeing all the places that I have only read about in books. All of this amounts to spending less time beading. I am working on a project now that will be a banner necklace. It features the face of one of the priestesses from the mural in the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii. Maybe I will finish her by the time my daughter and I go on spring break to Pompeii (Feb 2006)."

Knowing from personal experience, there is nothing like a trip to ancient lands that inspires designing. And with Pat's obvious love for the ancients, I am sure she will find lots to inspire her!
