No Easy Beads AKA Beverly Herman
by Sigrid Wynne-Evans

Beverly Herman
I usually try to hide from the camera.
Bev Herman grew up in S.W. Michigan in a small town called South Haven. Seven years ago, Bev and her husband moved to New Orleans where her husband took a job transfer.

When Bev's daughter attended Kendal College of Art and Design in Michigan and found a bead store, Bev became interested in beading. Bev started out stringing with semi-precious stones and brass castings. Although, she took a few classes at Larry Trade Winds in Watervielt, Michigan, Bev is primarily self-taught through books, magazines and the internet.

Bev says that her mentors are Dona Anderson and Judith Giffen. Their styles and techniques influence her work. Her work is also influenced by the richness of art in New Orleans, particularly at Mardi Gras time. She enjoys creating Mardi Gras masks for the festivities.

After having moved to New Orleans, Bev has had the flexibility to travel and teach bead classes. She has taught at numerous venues including: the Quilters Guild in New Orleans; New Orleans Gem and Mineral Society; Arkansas Bead Retreat 1,2,3 and 4; Shreveport Bead Retreat. Some of the patterns Bev has on bead-patterns.com are from the classes she taught at these retreats.

Bev does most of her beading at her computer desk in her beadroom which serves a double function as a guest bedroom. For designing and for her written instructions, she uses Adobe Photoshop, Bead Cellar, and First Publisher. Bev feels that the attention to detail, surface embellishment and finishing touches turn beadwork into pieces of art.

Bev's favorite pieces are the ones she made while traveling from New Orleans to Michigan. As for her biggest accomplishments, helping to deliver her second granddaughter, Katelyn; learning web design, and being on the Advisory Board and acting as the facilitator for the Bead Society of New Orleans are what she is particularly proud of.

Bev is working on a book of original designs with tips and techniques to finish beadwork. While no deadlines are set, this is a goal Bev is working towards. I am sure that this will be a wonderful book if Bev's offerings on bead-patterns.com are any indication of what treats may lay in store for us!
